Velasco Moves Into 2nd On PCC’s All-Time WWP Goals List

Pasadena City College women's water polo sophomore Stephanie Velasco increased her total to 47 goals this season, and 110 goals for her career, allowing her to climb to No. 2 on the all-time Lancers goals scoring list. 

Velasco only trails all-time leader Makenzie Blank, who scored 168 goals in the 2011/2012 seasons. An Eagle Rock High graduate, Velasco is only the third Lancer ever to reach triple digits in goals.

At the Battle at the Beach Tournament held at Cypress and Long Beach City Colleges, Velasco scored 17 goals in four games, including a career-high eight in a 22-13 loss to Cerritos. She shot at a 54 percent success rate (17-for-32 attempts) and added 11 steals. 

"If she wasn't scoring she was making things happen for other players," said PCC head coach Terry Stoddard. "Stephanie played great defense, and was multi-dimensional. She was difficult to defend and produced despite being double-teamed all weeked."

Another player who excelled was Sharon Perez, who tallied a school record-tying seven assists in the Cerritos defeat. Perez became the second Lancer this year to reach the seven helpers total as Ariahn Givens accomplished the feat in a win over LA Trade Tech on September 17. 

Caroline Liu added three goals against Cerritos while Vanessa Natividad scored her first collegiate goal. In a 13-7 loss v. Sierra, Velasco posted three goals as did Givens, who added seven steals. In a 14-7 defeat v. Rio Hondo, Velasco produced the hat trick while Givens tacked on three assists and seven steals. Goalie Alenoush Aslanian totaled six saves. In a 14-4 loss v. Citrus, Velasco also pumped in three goals.

PCC (1-17 overall) returns to the pool Wednesday, Oct. 29 in a 3 p.m. South Coast Conference game at Mt. San Antonio College.
