What Drives Mauricio?

 

Mauricio Mendez has always wanted to have his own business. Now, in just three years, he has put up two—two repair shops called Complete Auto Repair Specialists, or CARS.

CARS is a family business and does practically everything except major repairs. Mendez points out the advantages of their personalized services: “You go to big places like dealers and you may never get to see or talk to the mechanic, and then they charge you a lot just to take a look at your car. We try to be upfront with people, help them to save money, giving quality services at good prices. We don’t use cheap parts and try to sell it to you at a high price. We use original parts, dealer quality, throughout.” Mendez, who has worked 22 years as a mechanic, says he also keeps himself up to date on new cars and car diagnostics so he can improve his knowledge and skills.

Mendez’s daughter, Lori, attributes CARS’ success to her father’s relationship with people, whether they are clients or not. “People who come in just go to him; they always want to talk to him. He tells them, right off the bat, anything and everything that he has to do to your car. Nothing is hidden. Everything is out in the open. He doesn’t say you need this or you need that, when you really don’t. They trust him and they feel safe with him there. And you know, they should be able to trust the mechanic who works your car, the car that you, or your wife, or your kids drive everyday. You know, I think the secret is, he not only takes care of the car, he also takes care of the client. In fact he takes care of the client first, and the car next.

Mendez had some tips that will help car owners save money. “Get your car checked out when you get it serviced.　 List down all the things the car might need in the immediate future. Take special care during summer. You have to keep on top of things. It saves you money in the end. ”
