St. Philip the Apostle School to Hold First Ever Jog-A-Thon

“On Your Mark, Get Set, Go!” All students from Kindergarten through eighth grade will participate in St. Philip the Apostle School’s first-ever Jog-A-Thon to promote health, fitness and well-being during an Earth and Health Awareness Day on April 22nd. The Earth and Health Awareness Day will take place at 1363 Cordova Street in Pasadena from 8:00 a.m. to noon.

Each grade will wear different colored shirts designed by 7th grader Emily Wallace, as they run as many laps as they can in a half-an-hour around two different tracks roped off on the basketball courts. The Jog-A-Thon will give the children the opportunity to get exercise, raise money for the school and have fun. The Jog-A-Thon also will encourage friendly-competition. Prizes will be awarded for the most laps run in each class and one prize for the most money collected in the student body.

The Jog-A-Thon is just one aspect of the Earth and Health Awareness Day. Games and activities are planned throughout the morning to promote healthier living. Dr. Julianne Kwak-Lee, Chief of Pediatric Orthopaedic’s at USC/Keck School of Medicine and Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, will speak to the students about Sports Fitness. Workshops will be held on preservation, knowing and identifying root vegetables, and DIY house cleaners for both the home and classroom.

Students will learn about healthy food choices too. A Health Table will be set up in Holy Angel Hall at the school where children can take a crack at reading food labels and deciphering which common snacks are healthy and which are not.

“The idea is to show children common snack foods, their nutritional values, or not, and to see where they can get better selections,” said Dolores Gibbs, who is in charge of the Health portion of the Earth Day celebration.

The mission of Saint Philip the Apostle School is to provide a child-centered learning environment in which the spiritual, intellectual, emotional and physical needs of each child are met. As an essential component of the teaching ministry of Saint Philip the Apostle Parish, the school provides an exceptional education by integrating Catholic values with high academic standards and service to others. The school embraces an appreciation of diversity and mutual respect and seeks to inspire each student to adopt his or her unique role as a child of God.
