The Pasadena Police Department hosted the 1st Annual SWAT Competition at Burro Canyon in the San Gabriel Mountains on October 25, 2011. Ten SWAT teams, involving over 70 SWAT officers from Southern California, competed in 6 tactical events to raise over $5,000 for the South Pasadena Police Department Kevin Sandoval Scholarship Fund.

South Pasadena Police Officer Sandoval died of a medical condition on June 14, 2011 while undergoing tactical training with the Pasadena Police SWAT team at Burro Canyon.

Long Beach Police Dept. SWAT team won First Place achieving the highest overall scores in shooting, physical fitness, teamwork and sniper operations. The Pasadena Police Dept. hosted the event but did not enter a team into the competition.

“This type of competition improves the capabilities of our tactical units in the San Gabriel Valley to better serve our communities in case of future critical incidents,” said Pasadena Police Chief Phillip Sanchez. “And it shows the commitment and care that we all share for the Sandoval family and for the memory of their son, Kevin, who was committed to be the finest tactical officer possible.”
