Pasadena Sees 36 New COVID-19 Cases and 1 New Death as Infections, Hospitalizations Reach Record Levels in L.A. County

Pasadena health officials reported 36 new detected COVID-19 infections and one new death on Tuesday, as Los Angeles County saw it’s highest number of reported infections on a single day, as well as the highest number of hospitalized COVID-19 patients, authorities said.

The death reported in Pasadena took place at a senior care facility in early-May, but was only just confirmed as a coronavirus death, city spokeswoman Lisa Derderian said.

The city has seen 63 new infections since Monday. Pasadena’s death toll from the virus stood at 101.

Officials remained especially concerned about an increase in infections among patients younger than 40 years old, and the Latinx community has been hit especially hard in recent weeks, Derderian said.

Fifty-two COVID-19 patients were being treated at Huntington Hospital on Tuesday.

Officials in Los Angeles County reported the highest-ever single-day numbers for new detected infections, as well as hospitalizations, on Tuesday.

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health announced 4,244 new cases of COVID-19 in the county, along with 73 new deaths.

“This is one of the highest numbers of new deaths reported in a day and may reflect a lag in the reporting of deaths over the weekend,” the agency said in a written statement.

A record-high of 2,103 patients were hospitalized, with 27% of them in intensive care units and 19 percent — or about 400 people — being treated with ventilators, county officials said.

The county’s total recorded infections stood at 140,307 cases and 3,894 deaths.

In addition to the human loss and suffering, the continued surge of COVID-19 infections jeopardized L.A. County’s progress in reopening, L.A. County Director of Public Health Barbara Ferrer said.

“Today’s numbers are alarming and unfortunately are the result of many businesses and individuals not adhering to the basic public health requirements of distancing and wearing face coverings. We are just not able to continue on a recovery journey without everyone doing their part. Keeping businesses open is only possible if we get back to slowing the spread. ”

“As a community, we must slow the spread of COVID-19 to prevent an overwhelming surge of COVID-19 in our hospitals and more untimely deaths,” she said. “I urge you to wear a face covering, stay at home as much as possible, avoid close contact with people you don’t live with and wash your hands. Together, we can stop the spread of this deadly virus.”

Nearly 1.4 million VOCID-19 tests have been administered in the county, with a 9% positivity rate, county officials said.

State officials announced 7,346 new infections and 47 new deaths on Tuesday, bringing California’s totals to 336,508 COVID-19 cases and 7,087 deaths.

Los Angeles County accounted for 42% of all infections in the state as of Tuesday, as well as 55% of the state’s deaths.
