All Saints Church to Honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with Daylong Community Reading of His Works

All Saints Church will honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with a daylong community reading of his speeches and writings on Monday, January 15, the national holiday in his memory.

The event dubbed as “Let Freedom Ring” is an important annual tradition at All Saints Church. It will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m at All Saints Church, 132 North Euclid Avenue.

Guests can read or listen during the event. Readings will be available in Spanish and English. The event will also be streamed live online for those who cannot come to the venue. 

All Saints Church has been holding the annual daylong reading of King’s works over the past eight years. 

All Saints’ rector Mike Kinman, who is one of the people behind the event, said he became inspired to hold daylong readings of King’s work after he had read the latter’s writing and speeches from the book “A Testament of Hope: The Essential Writings and Speeches of Martin Luther King, Jr.” several years ago.

“A whole new King was opened up to me. One whose love was radical, whose love allowed for anger and even rage. One who railed against capitalism and poverty, Viet Nam and white moderates.” 

“A King who was so different from the whitewashed, kum ba yah King that had been sold to me for most of my life,” Kinman said in an article published by All Saints Church. 

Before “Let Freedom Ring” was born, Kinman already had a personal tradition, that every year on Martin Luther King Day, he would read King’s writings and speeches and immerse in his words.
