The Tournament of Roses® announced today that the application period is now open for The Rose Bowl Game Keith Jackson Postgraduate Scholarship.

The scholarship, which launched in 2019, recognizes one senior student or recent graduate from both the Big Ten and Pac-12 Conference for exceptional achievement in academics and civic service. Each student will receive a $10,000 scholarship, to be paid to their postgraduate institution of choice, to further their academic study in an area of their choosing.

Additionally, as part of the Keith Jackson Postgraduate Scholarship, each recipient will be given the opportunity to receive a “Rose Bowl Game Experience.” The experience will consist of a four-night trip to Pasadena, Calif., to shadow staff during the build-up to “The Granddaddy of Them All,” culminating with the opportunity to work the Rose Bowl Game on New Year’s Day.

The scholarship is named on behalf of Keith Jackson, who was the voice of college football for several generations. Jackson was a man of many catchphrases, including “Whoa, Nellie” and “Big Uglies”, but was also credited with popularizing the Rose Bowl Game’s nickname as “The Granddaddy of Them All”. He was on the call for the Rose Bowl Game on 15 occasions, more than any other broadcaster, between 1989 and 2006. His final game in the broadcast booth was the 2006 BCS National Championship at the Rose Bowl Game.

“After a one-year hiatus due to the pandemic, we are excited to bring back our Rose Bowl Game Keith Jackson Scholarship that will culminate with a special experience at the 2022 Rose Bowl Game,” said Bob Miller, 2021-2022 Pasadena Tournament of Roses President. “Our scholarship recipients in 2019 were extremely dynamic individuals and the Tournament of Roses, along with our partners at the Big Ten and Pac-12, is proud to continue to provide this opportunity.”

The inaugural scholarship recipients included the University of Nebraska’s Angela Mercurio and the University of Oregon’s Petra Salko. Mercurio, who was a standout track and field athlete, received a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry and women’s and gender studies from Nebraska. She was named the 2019 NCAA Woman of the Year and is currently finishing her first year at Harvard Medical School. Salko earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration with a concentration in finance at Oregon. She was a four-year letter winner in women’s golf and was the 2019 Pac-12 Scholar Athlete of the Year. She is currently studying at the Copenhagen Business School.

The Keith Jackson Postgraduate Scholarship is funded by the Rose Bowl Game, which is a tri-party agreement between the Pasadena Tournament of Roses, the Big Ten Conference and the Pac-12 Conference.
