Fredericks Qualified for Ballot in Pasadena Unified District 6 Race

Tina Wu Fredericks, a mother of two Pasadena Unified School District students and software engineer, has qualified for candidacy for the PUSD School Board of Education, District 6 election.

The district includes East Pasadena and Sierra Madre. Fredericks has lived in Pasadena for 10 years.

The seat is currently held by Larry Torres. Torres announced that he is not seeking re-election.

 According to a campaign statement, Fredericks is also a community and political activist and former classroom teacher.  As a credentialed teacher, she has taught elementary, middle, and high school, including a stint in the PUSD, the statement said.

 “I am passionate about education and want to see our schools succeed as a whole.  I will fight for smaller class sizes, more teachers, ensure there is a librarian, nurse, custodian, and counselor in each school, and work to have the highest safety standards for reopening schools,” Fredericks said.

In a prepared statement, Fredericks said she has been preparing to run and speaking to voters for the past year.

“Like many constituents in the district, I am a product of public schools. Public schools are foundational to a democracy. I was heartened to learn from parents who have grown children or kids in private school that many of them strongly believe in public schools,” she said.

The statement said Fredericks believes that the COVID-19 crisis is an opportunity to reimagine education.

“The only way we can start getting more funding for schools is by expecting more, because our kids are worth it.”
