Today’s Pasadena Senior Games will see 71-year-old Pasadenan and longtime athlete Sarah Sneider among the virtual army of older people who have keep alive the flame of youthful athleticism as they have aged.

“It’s never too late to be a champion,” explained Sneider.

Sneider is one of many unique seniors participating in the Pasadena Senior Games on June 4 who recognizes the importance of staying healthy, not just for the Games, but all year around. This realization isn’t anything new rather it’s a new found passion for doing what she’s already done throughout her life.

She is currently the Powerlifting Commissioner for the the Senior Games, a role that she took over when her late husband passed away recently. His talents as a lifter earned him the record for bench pressing 451 pounds when he was in his early 60’s.

Snieder, by contrast, weights a mere 103 pounds.

“I like to think that the people involved in powerlifting and all of the sports in general are inspired. We have very loyal athletes that train all year around,” explained Sneider.

Sneider’sfocus isn’t so much on winning competitions.

“At the end of the day, these people are strengthening their bodies and there’s more to it than just being the greatest,” said Sneider.

Her athletic credentials also include competing in events such as cycling, track and field, strength challenge and holds world records in the rope climb event.

The Senior Games serve as a platform of inspiration to keep seniors active on a year round basis instead of a one off event. The month long extravaganza requires thoughtful training just as any other sporting event does, kickstarting a lifestyle through routine regimen.

“The Senior Games have helped me and many other realize that being active is the key to longevity and enjoying life as well,” explained Sneider.

Sneider envisions herself being apart of the Senior Games and the broader community for a long time to come. She is constantly inspired by older athletes that reaffirm her love for what she does.

“I look to the older participants and only hope that I can follow in their path. The aging population in Pasadena has a lot to look forward to,” said Sneider.

The Pasadena Senior Games kick off the month-long events lineup on Saturday at Caltech.
