A man was beaten by a group of eight attackers, pistol-whipped and robbed in a residential neighborhood in Pasadena on Wednesday night, officials said.

The crime took place about 9:15 p.m. in the 100 block of West Hammond Street, just west of North Fair Oaks Avenue, said Pasadena police Lt. Anthony Russo.

A 21-year-old Palmdale man had driven to the neighborhood to visit friends, the lieutenant said. He was sitting in his parked car with three others when a group approached on foot.

One man in the group confronted the driver and challenged him to fight, Russo said. The victim got out of his car and began fighting with the man.

The others in the group then joined in attacking the victim, who tried to run away but was chased down, he said.

As the assault continued, one of the attackers pulled a handgun and pistol-whipped the victim, according to Russo. Another attacker reached into the man’s pocket and stole his wallet before the group fled.

A detailed description of the group of male suspects was not available.

Russo said the victim was treated for injuries such as cuts and bruises to his face.
