Local Races Not Finalized, Next Election Vote Count Update Scheduled for Friday

More than 400,000 ballots still remain to be counted from Tuesday’s primary election in Los Angeles County, according to an estimate released Wednesday by the county Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk’s Office.

The first post-election ballot count update is scheduled for Friday, June 10.

The office estimated that 400,000 vote-by-mail ballots still need to be processed, along with 680 conditional voter-registration ballots, 105 provisional ballots and 300 other miscellaneous ballots.

The clerk’s office will also continue to accept mail ballots through June 14, as long as they were postmarked by Election Day.

Semi-final results released early Wednesday morning showed that 822,545 ballots had been tallied, equating to a turnout of 14.45% of registered voters in Los Angeles County.

“After Election Day there are still many outstanding ballots to be processed and counted in the Official Election Canvass,” according to a statement released on Wednesday.

The votes reported so far reflect 70.56% of all mailed ballots received and 29.44% of all vote center ballots received so far.

In local City Council races, incumbent John Kennedy leads Brandon Lamar 823 (62.49%) to Lamar’s 494 (37.51%) in District 3.

Jess Rivas ran unopposed in District 5 and will be sworn in in December.

In District 7, Candidate Jason Lyon was the top vote-getter in the race as of early Wednesday morning. Lyon collected 1,368 votes (52.25%) of District 7 votes counted so far, followed by Ciran Hadjian with 964 (36.82%) and Allen Shay with 286 (10.92%)

California state law requires the County Registrar to complete and certify results within 30 days. This provision of the law recognizes the complexity of completing the ballot count and conducting a thorough audit of the election results to ensure accuracy.
