PCCs Welcomes 2013 Artist-in-Residence, Entertainer-Musician Patrick Sheridan

Pasadena City College’s Performing and Communication Arts Division is honored to host Patrick Sheridan, one of the most celebrated tuba soloists, as its 2013 Artist in Residence. Sheridan will be on campus April 2 through 4 in a series of events open to the public.

Beginning Tuesday morning, April 2, Sheridan will be in V111 for band rehearsal, and at 11:30 a.m. he will be teaching a master class with students in LL130. A light luncheon will follow at 1 p.m. in the Terrace Room, and from 4 to 6 p.m. he will be teaching a master class with Chamber Ensembles in LL130.

Remember to bring a horn on Wednesday, April 3, because Sheridan will be going through his “Brass Gym” – a series of brass warm-up and flexibility exercises, from 9 to10 a.m. in Jameson Amphitheatre. From 11 a.m. to noon, he will be teaching a master class in V207, followed by his “Breathing Gym” with Chamber Singers at 2 p.m. in V111. Sheridan will demonstrate how to use your entire lung capacity to your advantage to create good sound. From 3 to 5 p.m., he will teach a master class with Chamber Ensembles in V207.

On Thursday, April 4, Sheridan will be in V111 for band rehearsal, followed by a concert in Harbeson Hall at 12 p.m. There will be a Large Brass Ensemble at 3 p.m. in V108, and Sheridan will wrap up his residency with a concert in Harbeson Hall at 7 p.m. with student performances and the PCC Wind Ensemble. A dessert reception for Sheridan will follow the performance at 9 p.m. in the Campus Center WiFi Lounge.

Sheridan has performed more than 3,000 concerts in over 50 countries. He has played in venues ranging from the White House, where he was a member of “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band, to NBA half-time shows and the Hollywood Bowl.

As a composer and arranger, Sheridan’s music has been performed internationally by symphony orchestras, concert bands, marching bands, jazz bands and drum corps. Known as a virtuosic musician, Sheridan is an incredibly diverse artist with concert performances transcending stylistic genres.

“He’s an amazing musician and a lot of fun,” PCC Instructor Beth Mitchell said.

Sheridan has taught music and has been a guest conductor for schools across the country. Currently, he works as the chief design consultant for XO and Jupiter Band Instruments, which are used throughout the United States.

These events are free and open to the public.
