Two new projects, both for the benefit of the Pasadena Police Department, are being considered for inclusion in the recommended Capital Improvement Program (CIP) for fiscal years 2022 to 2026.

These projects are the renovation and improvement at the Pasadena Police Department Building located at 207 S. Garfield Ave., and the design and construction of a new Mobile Command Center (MCC) vehicle.

The second project also includes the design and construction of a new hangar at the heliport to store the MCC.

These two projects will be discussed on Wednesday, April 14, when the City’s Planning Commission convenes in a special virtual meeting starting at 6:30 p.m.

A report by the Department of Planning and Community Development said 10 new projects were initially proposed for the CIP for 2022 through 2026, consistent with the General Plan. After the two new projects are added, the recommended CIP will be reviewed by the City Council’s Finance Committee before it is passed on to the full Council for adoption.

The report showed that renovation of the Police Department building will be conducted in three phases, starting with improvements on the second floor to include creating a more open floor plan, painting, and flooring.

A new kitchen is being added to the Large Assembly Room on the second floor, and computers and the elevator will be upgraded.

Phase II will cover renovating the first floor, including upgrading the flooring, replacing ceiling tiles, and painting. New computers and furniture for the first floor will also be procured.

The first floor houses the Records, Community Services, Traffic, Neighborhood Services, and Patrol Divisions.

Phase III will involve renovations on the third floor and the basement. The improvements necessary include upgrading the break room and kitchen for the Dispatch office and installing new furniture, painting, and ceiling tile replacement.

The break room at the basement will also be renovated, according to the report.

The report added the planned renovations, expected to cost up to $3 million, will allow for better service to residents and increased productivity.

For the second project, the is expected to spend some $2.2 million for the Police Department’s new Mobile Command Center Truck (MCC) and for the procurement and installation of better video downlink capabilities from the police helicopter camera and other aerial platforms, including drones, to the MCC. The project will also include design and construction of a new hangar at the Police Department’s heliport where the MCC vehicle will be housed.
