Political Gumbo: District 3 Needs Lamar and Jones United

Published on Tuesday, October 4, 2022 | 4:37 am

No need for a recap on this one.

But why not, the City Council appointed Justin Jones to the District 3 seat last Thursday night.

And most people know Brandon Lamar wanted the seat and was considered by many to be a lock, based on the 40% he received in his election loss against longtime Pasadenan John Kennedy whose death left the seat vacant in July.

If you are looking for me to relitigate the City Council appointment you can stop reading now.

It’s over. Justin Jones represents District 3.

Of course, it’s hard to lose. But like Michael Jordan once said, before you learn to succeed, you must first learn to fail.

Ouch, that sounds like something written above the locker room for the PHS Bulldogs’ football team.

Yes, we’re getting close to the Turkey Tussle.

Back on point.

As I said several weeks ago, someone would be disappointed after the special meeting.

I’m not even telling you to let it go, Brandon. That’s up to you, but if you wish to continue to make an impact in D3 you have to put it aside and work even harder.

It doesn’t have to be a big meeting in public, and an after action report is not necessary.

If you are still committed to serving the residents of that district, now is the time to show your supporters that your concerns for the district is what drives you forward. You must be willing to work with Jones to get things done, and yes the freshman councilmembers must admit he needs that help.

Yes, there is a growing chasm between centrists and progressives. Sadly, there seems to be a growing chasm between every group.

The callers on Monday want to accuse the City Council of ignoring them. Yes, granted many of the callers said they weren’t attacking Jones, what’s the point.

No, it was not a Jan. 6 event, but still it was disappointed people unhappy their guy did not win whining about the system.

Jones, Lamar those are not waters for you to navigate.

District 3 needs people concerned about results, not voting machines.

At this rate the MyPillow guy and Rudy Guiliani will be coming to town.

There are real issues that need to be addressed.

Quite frankly far too many Black people are fleeing the city and heading east for a variety of reasons and yes that includes people leaving D3.

So the Black leaders must stand together. And yes, I would call for both men to come together if they were not Black.

But they are, and that cannot be ignored in a town berefit of young, common sense minded strong Black leadership.

The death of John Kennedy left a tremendous void in District 3, and at this point no one person can fill that chasm.

The people of District 3 need both of you.

Shake hands, have a cold one and get to work.
