Sequoyah School Wants City to Approve Expansion of Its Student Enrollment

Pasadena’s Hearing Officer will conduct a special meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 16, to consider an application to review a Conditional Use Permit issued for Sequoyah School, located at 301 N. Orange Grove Blvd., which seeks to increase its maximum student enrollment.

Sequoyah School is an independent, progressive co-educational K-12 day school established in 1958. The school wants to increase their maximum student enrollment to 195, according to the public hearing notice circulated by the Hearing Officer. This will need a review of Conditional Use Permit No. 3278 which was approved in 2016 and covers much of the property where the school is situated.

Sequoyah School is located on the grounds of the Neighborhood Church in Pasadena, adjacent to the historic Gamble House and within walking distance of playing fields in the Arroyo and the Rose Bowl Aquatic Center.

A Modification to the CUP was approved on July 30, 2019 setting the stage for an increase of the student enrollment up to 216. The increase was to be allowed in three phases. This application covers Phase 2 of the increase.

A condition of approval to the Modification to CUP No. 3278 requires a review of the school’s compliance with the conditions of approval by the Hearing Officer at a public hearing before the school is allowed to increase student enrollment.

According to the Hearing Officer agenda, the Department of Planning and Community Development is recommending approval of the student enrollment increase with conditions. These conditions will be further explained during the public hearing.

The public hearing on Wednesday begins at 5:30 p.m. Members of the community may access the hearing through video conference at https://us02web.zoom.us/j/82638320836 or by calling (669) 900-6833 and using the webinar ID 826 3832 0836.
