Southwestern Academy’s 92nd Anniversary

The overcast skies and rain did not dampen the enthusiasm of students, faculty, and Board Trustees as they celebrated Southwestern Academy’s 92 Anniversary.

Founded in the April of 1924 by Maurice Veronda –this April 7, 2016, marked Southwestern Academy’s 92nd year in existence. As part of a now 92 year-old tradition, Southwestern Academy’s Headmaster, Mr. Kenneth R. Veronda began the celebration by speaking about Southwestern’s history during a special afternoon assembly. Students and faculty were dressed in blazers with umbrellas in hand.

As a symbol of the anniversary each year a tree is planted on campus. This year a Persimmon was planted with the help of all attendees… yes even board members had a chance to handle a shovel. As is tradition, after the ceremonial tree planting, the students were rewarded with ice cream and cake for their efforts. After tummies were full the afternoon games began.

Students competed in the annual “Anniversary Antics” (team games). Students changed into their house team colors and participated in an amusing series of races and friendly competitions. A few students got wet but their excitement and energy buoyed their spirits. The day was filled with fun and proved to be one of the most enjoyable anniversary celebrations in Southwestern Academy’s history.
