Tax Day Arrives as Many Americans Scramble to File Returns

IRS extends deadline for storm-affected Californians while offering resources to last-minute filers

April 15, 2024 – Today marks the annual deadline for most Americans to file their federal income tax returns with the Internal Revenue Service. Known as Tax Day, this yearly event sees millions of taxpayers across the nation rushing to complete their tax forms and make any necessary payments.

In Pasadena and throughout the United States, individuals and businesses are finalizing their tax preparations, with many seeking assistance from local tax services and community organizations. The Internal Revenue Service expects to receive tens of millions of returns on this day alone, adding to the more than 100 million it has already processed this tax season.

While the majority of Americans face the April 15 deadline, some taxpayers have been granted extensions due to extenuating circumstances. The Internal Revenue Service announced tax relief measures for residents of San Diego County in California affected by severe storms and flooding. Individuals in these disaster areas now have until June 17, 2024, to file their returns and pay any taxes owed.

To assist last-minute filers, the Internal Revenue Service offers a range of online tools and resources on its website, IRS.gov, to help individuals navigate the filing process. The agency’s Taxpayer Assistance Centers also provide face-to-face help for taxpayers seeking guidance with their taxes.

Local organizations in Pasadena are also stepping up to support taxpayers during this critical time.

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, sponsored by the Internal Revenue Service, provides free tax preparation services to individuals who meet certain income requirements.

As the tax season draws to a close, experts recommend that taxpayers take advantage of available deductions and credits to minimize their tax liability. Common deductions include charitable donations, mortgage interest, and state and local taxes. Taxpayers should also double-check their returns for accuracy to avoid errors that could delay processing or result in penalties.

For those who are unable to file by the April 15 deadline, requesting an extension is crucial. An extension grants an additional six months to file a return, pushing the due date to October 15, 2024. However, it is important to note that an extension to file is not an extension to pay any taxes owed. Taxpayers should estimate and pay their tax liability by the original deadline to avoid interest and penalties.
