Traffic Violations Lead to Gun Seizures in Pasadena

Two separate vehicle stops prompted by traffic violations resulted in the recovery of handguns and the arrests of the drivers in Pasadena on Saturday, police said.

The first arrest took place about 2:40 p.m. after officers began following a car that had made “several vehicle code violations,” Pasadena police Lt. Marcia Taglioretti said.

Before officers activated their lights, the car came to a sudden stop in the 400 block of East Orange Grove Boulevard, she said. A man and woman got out.

As officers looked into the car, they noticed loose marijuana in the center console, Taglioretti said. While possession of marijuana is legal in California, it remains illegal to drive with it in an open container or drive while under the influence of it.

Officers spoke with the driver, and further investigation turned up an unserialized “ghost gun” in the car, along with a loaded magazine.

Jaumaul Rashaud Jackson, 34, of Los Angeles was arrested on suspicion of weapon-relation violations, according to police and Los Angeles County booking records. He was released on a bond pending legal proceedings.

Another similar arrest took place about 7:15 p.m. after police stopped a car for a traffic violation in the area of Foothill Boulevard and Sierra Madre Villa Avenue, according to Taglioretti.

The driver became “uncooperative” with drivers, and supervisors were summoned to the scene to speak with him, she said. The man ultimately admitted to having a gun in the car and surrendered to officers.

Once he got out of his car, officers saw he had been sitting on top of a handgun, along with a loaded magazine, Taglioretti said. Methamphetamine was also found inside the vehicle.

Jermaine Lamar Smith was arrested on suspicion of weapon-related violations, according to police and county booking records. Bail was set at $35,000 pending his initial court appearance.
