We Get Letters | Scott Phelps: No Voters’ Land – The Decrepit Rose Bowl Loop Road

Published on Sunday, December 26, 2021 | 5:41 am

Hundreds of people use the Rose Bowl loop to exercise daily. Joggers, roller bladers, bicyclists and walkers all benefit from this community institution, which thus contributes to better community health. Unfortunately, the road has fallen into significant disrepair, as evidenced by the photos provided with this article. It is not clear if the last repaving was done poorly, or just too long ago, but cracks are everywhere. These cracks make for a very bumpy ride for those exercising on wheels.

I emailed the city to see if these roads were on the list to be repaved, but sadly, the answer was no. I have not seen this road be a priority for either of the two city council members who share the area, which is understandable given that there aren’t any voters living along the road. Perhaps there are exercise enthusiasts who will appeal to the city to make the re-paving of this very well-used community resource a priority in the new year. I hope so. Would be great to have a smooth loop ride in ‘22.

  • I run that loop several times a week and have the same thoughts every time I run it. Not only that, but i wish the City would also at LEAST use a street sweeper on the inside of the loop once in awhile too. That would also make for a better situation. I know some people that tried to roller skate on the inner loop and quit right away because of the gravel and sand all over the place.

  • I agree Scott. I’m concerned that someone could get hurt. The city could also widen the area for walkers and cyclists by closing the inner traffic loop and change the outer lane to one-way only on Rosemont and West streets. Washington and Seco streets could still remain two-way. The Rose Bowl Operating Committee should champion the change. I’ll vote for that!
