“PDQ” stands for a lot of things, depending on what you’re talking about. It can refer to the speed of something if you need it “pretty damn quick” or it can mean “performance, dependability and quality” if it refers to business practices.

But when it comes to cupcakes, you have to be referring to “Pasadena’s Distinctive Quintessential” cupcakes, and those are found at Wonderland Custom Cakes.

“We have the quintessential gourmet cupcakes in the business,” says Anthony Valerio, co-owner with his aunt Vandy Altounian of Wonderland Custom Cakes. “”We use only the best ingredients and the bold flavoring, the intensity of our flavorings, is what make our cakes the best.”

Located at 107 South Fair Oaks Avenue, Suite 110, in Old Pasadena (which is funnily enough is actually round the corner on West Dayton Street), Wonderland Custom Cakes has cupcakes of every flavor, from Chocolate Bacon to Salted Caramel.

“We are on the cutting edge of cupcakes,” Valerio says. “While most places have only 10 to 15 different flavors, we have 35 flavors. We also make custom flavors and, as far as I know, we are the only ones who make gluten-free cupcakes.”

Valerio says he did not have formal culinary training, but learned to bake from his mother, grandmother, and uncle. He says it is important to deliver quality to their customers, not only in how the cakes look, but also in how they taste.

“When people see our cakes, they say ‘Wow! Those are beautiful,’ but when they taste the cupcakes, they realize the flavor matches the beauty of the cakes.”

Wonderland Custom Cakes also makes large even cakes. The color, design, and flavor of the cake is as important to them as it is to their customers. They even have their own custom blend of flour so that all is as distinctive as their business.

“Our vanilla cake is so different because we bake it with real vanilla bean, so it has lots of flavor,” Valerio says. “Everyone loves Red Velvet, but our Red Vixxen is distinctive too because it has a ‘red hot’ flavor. People just love our flavors.”

Just stop in and try the featured cupcake of the day and you’ll be convinced that Wonderland Custom Cakes has Pasadena’s Distinctive Quintessential cupcakes. You can order their cakes by calling (626) 486-9977 or visit them on their website at www.wonderlandcustomcakes.com.
