Pasadena Waldorf’s 11th Graders Explore Themes of Music

In Waldorf’s Grade 11 History Through Music – Global Music Cultures class, students explore the theme of music that is meaningful and useful in everyone’s lives. They explore this theme by studying specific global music cultures and making music themselves as a group. Studies are centered on the people who make and enjoy the music, what constitutes music itself, and how we define meaning and use in relation to music. The class also features local culture bearers – guest artists or groups that are steeped in the musical practice – who lead students in workshops and perform for the student body.

Today students from Early Childhood to High School had the honor to welcome Mariachi Arcoiris de Los Angeles (Rainbow Mariachi of Los Angeles), the world’s first LGBTQ+ mariachi band, to the outdoor stage at PWHS. Under beautiful blue skies with snowcapped mountains behind them, band members shared songs, stories and traditions, and talked about their love for music and the hurdles they had to overcome. What a treat for the school community! “We cannot wait to have them back.”
