PUSD Names Teacher of the Year
Five Teachers of Excellence Named By Rotary Club Of Pasadena

The Pasadena Unified School District (PUSD) announces its 2026 Teacher of the Year, recognizing Michael Birnbryer-Lao, an exceptional educator and musician whose work at Blair Middle and High School, a 6-12 International Baccalaureate (IB) School, reflects a profound commitment to student learning, creativity, and connection.
Mr. Birnbryer-Lao has taught at Blair since 2008. A graduate of Berklee College of Music and Azusa Pacific University, he is an accomplished saxophonist who has expanded Blair’s music program to include Music Production, Modern Band, Concert Band, Orchestra, and IB Music. He founded several of these courses, broadening access to arts education and creating more opportunities for students to engage in music. His students regularly perform at the community events, including a recent performance opening for Ozomatli at the Pasadena Latino Heritage Celebration. He also helped secure grant funding for the program’s growth. Outside the classroom, Mr. Birnbryer-Lao continues to perform and compose professionally.
“I’m very grateful to my Blair community, from administrators to students and parents, I’ve always received so much support and encouragement,” said Mr. Birnbryer-Lao. “This honor is extremely motivating moving forward into the second half of my teaching career.”
The announcement is being made during Teacher Appreciation Week, a time to recognize the dedication of educators across PUSD, California, and the nation.
“During Teacher Appreciation Week, we’re proud to honor educators who are the heart of our district. As our Teacher of the Year, Mr. Birnbryer-Lao reflects how creativity and meaningful connections shape learning across PUSD,” said Superintendent Elizabeth Blanco, Ed.D. “We’re grateful for the way he inspires students to grow and find their voice.”
PUSD’s Teacher of the Year will go on to represent the district in the Los Angeles County Office of Education’s Teacher of the Year program.
Mr. Birnbryer-Lao is among five PUSD teachers recognized this year by the Pasadena Rotary as Teachers of Excellence.
PUSD congratulates all five Rotary honorees and extends its appreciation to educators across the district whose work strengthens and shapes students’ lives.
