Southwestern Academy’s Commitment to the Disadvantaged

Ogus Yildz from Turkey, Dudley Ralph’s store manager, Nhu Y Ta from Vietnam, and Mr.Pulgencio.

Southwestern Academy’s Mr. Pulgencio’s classes raised money to provide dinner to the less fortunate. Imagine that the holidays are approaching and your family is stuggling to make ends meet. You don’t know how you are going to pay the rent, much less manage to make a Christmas dinner or afford gifts for your children during the holidays. Gifts from kindred souls like Mr. Pulgencio does make a difference… it fills up the sould and fills up the holiday spirit. Christmas is the spirit of giving, and a time to show love and appreciation to those who need it the most.

A critical component of the Southwestern Academy experience is learning how to live in a diverse community, not just on campus but also as part of a global society. Through volunteerism, its students and staff consistently recognize the importance and value of assisting those who are in need. Southwestern Academy’s steadfast belief is that if it educates its students about the hardships of the world at large, they innately recognize their own ability to make a positive impact within society. As a result, they routinely make the choice to spend their free time in evenings and on weekends to help both local and national charities and causes. A philosophy of contributing to the whole is deeply rooted at Southwestern. It dates back to the early 1930’s when its campus housed the destitute and homeless during the Great Depression, and later, when Southwestern Academy students stepped forward to assist with the war effort during World War II.
