St. Gregory A. & M. Hovsepian Sixth Graders Explore Earth’s Atmosphere

St. Gregory A. & M. Hovsepian School sixth grade students recently brought science to life by modeling the formation of clouds and rain using a simple yet powerful experiment. With a jar, very hot water, ice, and salt, students recreated the conditions needed for condensation to occur. They used their observations to discuss what happens in Earth’s atmosphere and what might cause these changes.

As the warm water vapor met the cooled air created by the ice and salt, students observed the formation of tiny droplets that mimicked cloud development. The hands-on activity helped them better understand the water cycle, including evaporation, condensation, and precipitation. Through inquiry and discussion, students connected their experiment to real-world weather patterns, deepening their understanding of how atmospheric changes influence daily weather conditions.
