Transitional Kindergarten Expands and 2023-2024 School Registration Continues at SPUSD



During the 2023-2024 school year, SPUSD will continue to expand its transitional kindergarten (TK) program to provide additional early childhood education opportunities. The goal of the program is to achieve universal TK for four year olds by the 2025-2026 school year as specified in California Assembly Bill 130. This year, students who turn five between September 2 and April 2, 2024 are eligible to register for TK. The program provides children the opportunity to learn social, emotional, and hands-on academic skills that lead to success in kindergarten and beyond.

Enrolling a child for transitional kindergarten is identical to enrolling any new student in elementary school. During the summer months when schools are closed, families with elementary-age children who need to register for school should complete these steps:

1. Fill out the online Aeries Internet Registration (AIR) at: https://southpasadenausd.aeries.net/enrollment/
2. Print two copies of the completed form and bring them along with all residency verification documents to in-person registration;
3. Finish the registration process in person at the District Office at 1100 El Centro during the following dates and times: June 15, 22, 29; July 10, 17, 24, 27, and 31; and August 3 from 9-11 a.m.

Required documents at the registration confirmation include three current proofs of residence, two copies of the printed AERIES Internet Registration (AIR), original birth certificate or passport for the child, original immunization records for the child (officially translated, if in another language), and photo identification of the parent/guardian registering the child. The child’s home school is determined by the attendance area boundaries for each school, and addresses may be verified here. Parents who wish to enroll a new middle school student (entering 6th, 7th or 8th grade and not currently attending a SPUSD school) for the 2023-2024 school year should contact SPMS by emailing spmsregistrar@spusd.net to set up a registration appointment that will be scheduled at the middle school after August 1, 2023. If you are a South Pasadena resident and your child is currently enrolled in an SPUSD school, you do not need to re-register. Middle School WEB Orientation for 6th grade students/new students will be held on Friday, August 11, 2023. Additional information will be sent regarding annual notifications and data confirmation in late June/early July.

Summer registration appointments for new high school students may be made between July 6-12, 2023, and between August 1, 2023 and the first day of school on August 15. To schedule an appointment, email Alice Camacho-Espinoza at aespinoza@spusd.net. If your child is a current 8th grader at SPMS, they will automatically be enrolled at SPHS in 9th grade for the 23-24 school year. New student/freshman orientation will be held on August 9, 2023 at 8 a.m. Juniors and seniors will pick up books and materials on August 10 and freshmen and sophomores will pick up on August 11.

All existing and new families with students enrolled in SPUSD must complete data confirmation between Wednesday, July 26, 2023 at 8 a.m. and August 14, 2023 at noon through the parent portal at https://southpasadenausd.aeries.net/. Parents are encouraged to complete data confirmation promptly before the start of school on August 15, 2023 so there is no delay in teacher/course assignment. When on the data confirmation site, parents should select the Parent/Student portal to proceed. School sites will also send additional information to registered students before the first day of school.
