VADA Students Places First and Third at ArtCenter’s Shoe Design Contest

Pasadena High School (PHS) congratulates its CAMAD Student Exhibitors! In celebration of Black History Month, VADA and GCA students had the opportunity to participate in a shoe design contest sponsored by ArtCenter College. Students had just 2 weeks to plan and implement a design. On Friday evening ArtCenter hosted the students alongside alumni, faculty, and shoe design industry professionals.

The designs were judged and 2 of PHS VADA students placed in the top 3. Congratulations to Class of 2024 VADA student Phoebe Prentice (first place) and Class of 2025 VADA student Min Seon (third place). CAMAD student exhibitors also included Gianna Carmenate 12th grade, Fernando Gonzalez 12th grade, Ashley Hastanand 11th grade, Esme Huidor 11th grade, McKayla Marenco 12th grade, Manuel Osorio 12th grade, Reagan Robinson 11th grade, Tremaine Woodard 12th grade. Phoebe’s work is titled “Leadership, Acceptance, Resistance, and Performance”.

And in her words: “These shoes celebrate four Black and queer women. I have included Marsha P. Johnson, Barabara Jordan, Yasmin Benoit and Gladys Bentley. The art style is inspired by Aaron Douglass, a prominent artist during the Harlem Renaissance. It is important to me to spotlight lesser known people for Black history month.”

A massive thank you to Mr. Roosevelt Brown, City Councilmember Tyron Hampton, and Everyone at ArtCenter for their support of these kids!

The Visual Arts and Design Academy (VADA) in Creative Arts Media and Design (CAMAD) at Pasadena High School is a studio arts focused program within PUSD. Students explore traditional and digital media cross curricular integrated projects and daily studio practice.
