A view of the 2022 Home Tour

On Sunday, May 7 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., experience a wonderful journey through the homes of Rubio Street during the Altadena Guild of Huntington Memorial Hospital’s 70th Home & Garden Tour. Aptly titled “Rubio Street – The Gem of Altadena,” the event will unveil the stunning architectural masterpieces and lush gardens that grace this storied neighborhood.

The tour will showcase the best of Altadena’s Rubio Street, and guests will have the opportunity to explore some of the most impressive homes and gardens in the area.

The Altadena Guild has been supporting Huntington Memorial Hospital and the Huntington Memorial Research Institutes (HMRI) since its founding in 1951. With over $3 million donated to the Hospital and HMRI, the Altadena Guild’s contributions have made a significant impact on healthcare in the community. The proceeds from previous Home Tours have enabled the Guild to fulfill a $100,000 pledge to Huntington Hospital for their Cardiac & Vascular Care Center. This year’s tour aims to help the Guild fulfill another $100,000 pledge to Huntington Hospital for their new Surgery Center.

The tour will also support the Huntington Medical Research Institutes, which is renowned for its research into neurological diseases, cancer, and the vascular system. HMRI’s groundbreaking work seeks to uncover solutions to some of the most challenging healthcare issues, ultimately improving the quality of life for all of us. By participating in this event, guests will be supporting two invaluable resources in the community – Huntington Hospital and the Huntington Medical Research Institutes.

The Altadena Guild was founded on February 14, 1951, by Mrs. Barry A. Baxter, Mrs. Abe Hay, Mrs. Fred Nash, and Mrs. Thomas J. Smith. The Guild was established to extend and enlarge the work of the Women’s Auxiliary of Huntington Hospital in Pasadena, which had been formed 25 years earlier. The Altadena Guild’s active membership was limited to 50 women, and an unlimited number of associates was permitted. Each active member was required to earn and contribute $10.00 through fundraising and perform a minimum of 10 volunteer service hours per year.

The Altadena Guild’s first benefit was held in February 1952, which was a tour of three Altadena homes. The event yielded a profit of $428, which was donated to the Hospital for furnishing the offices of the Director and Secretary of the new research building. This began the Guild’s long relationship with the Research Clinics, which later became the Huntington Medical Research Institutes.

Over the years, the Altadena Guild has donated funds to purchase laboratory equipment, library books, and subscriptions to medical journals, as well as funding fellowships and special grants. The Guild’s logo features a California Golden Poppy, which is the official flower of Altadena. The Altadena highlands displayed vast fields of golden poppies prior to residential development, and the flower is a symbol of the community’s natural beauty.
