Altadena Library Event Digs Into Botanical Printing: Understanding the Differences among Fibers & Fixatives

Published on Jan 5, 2023

The Altadena Library District is offering a special Botanical Printing and Natural Dyeing workshop series every Saturday in January, with Artist-in-Residence Linda Illumanardi.

The free series begins Saturday, Jan. 7, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Altadena Library, located at 600 E. Mariposa Street in Altadena.

The workshop is designed for adults and teens aged 13 and up. All skill levels are welcome, but you must have fairly strong hands to bundle tightly to make a contact print.

For many years, dyers have used metal mordants to ensure a firmer hold of natural dyes and pigments for long-lasting prints. Linda Illumanardi will explain which ones are safe and how to use them. You’ll also explore the differences in fibers and mordants to achieve outstanding results and combine the prints with a “dye blanket” for additional background color.

Space is limited, and participants must be able to commit to four fun days for a month. The four sessions are a single series so only one registration is required.
