The creator of Dinotopia, James Gurney, will lead a live painting event featuring giant characters visiting Pasadena as part of the 5th annual LightBox Expo (LBX), a three-day celebration of art across animation, live action, illustration and gaming industries.
The event, “Colossal Characters,” will take place on Friday, Oct. 27, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., in front of the iconic Pasadena City Hall and throughout downtown Pasadena.
Imagine a giant character visiting Pasadena, and add either a playful (or apocalyptic) interaction between the giant character and the cityscape, and then draw or paint that on location – that’s how you participate in the event. It’s open to the public and artists of all ages and skill levels.
“Colossal Characters” is the kick-off event for LBX, which will run from Oct. 27 to 29 at the Pasadena Convention Center.
“It’s always a beautiful day in Pasadena, but it is particularly dynamic here when LightBox Expo brings the best artists in the world to our art-centric locale,” Michael Ross, CEO of the Pasadena Center Operating Company, which operates the Convention Center, said. “This massive celebration of the arts places an important spotlight on the creators behind our favorite television shows, games, movies, and other animated products. It creates opportunities for artists to meet and exchange ideas with the best in the industry, making room for imagination and a lot of fun.”
The expo is expected to draw over 12,000 attendees and over 600 of the best artists in the world, who will showcase their art and merchandise, participate in live panels and demonstrations, and offer portfolio reviews.
LBX is sponsored by more than 20 companies, schools and studios, including Procreate, Adobe, Schoolism, Sony Pictures Animation, Cartoon Network Studios, Disney Television Animation, Sketchbook, Illumination, Netflix Animation, Pixar, Seneca Polytechnic, Wacom, Walt Disney Animation Studios, Warner Bros. Animation, Lucasfilm Animation, ArtCenter, Riot Games and Supercell.
Single day tickets for LBX start at $70.96, including fees; three-day badges are $199.98, including fees; and are available for purchase online.
