At A Safe Space, Experts Will Talk Openly With Young People About Substance Use and Mental Health Issues

Published on May 11, 2022

Pasadena-based non-profit Day One, in collaboration with the Rethinking Alcohol and Other Drugs (RAD) Coalition, will host a screening and panel discussion of “Stand Still Like the Hummingbird,” the fifth episode of HBO’s Euphoria season 2, on Friday, May 13, 5 to 9 p.m.

Euphoria is an American teen drama television series created by Sam Levinson and produced in partnership with A24, that debuted with “Pilot” on June 16, 2019 on HBO. The series follows Rue Bennett, a recovering teenage drug addict who struggles to find her place in the world, and her fellow high school students through their experiences of identity, trauma, drugs, self-harm, family, friendships, love, and sex.

In “Stand Still Like the Hummingbird,” Rue’s mother, Leslie confronts Rue over her drug use. At first, Rue blames Gia, her younger sister but finds out Jules, her love interest, was the one who “snitched” on her. She tries to escape going to rehab through a series of diversions.

“The episode really displays what a person may do who is deep into addiction and how that might play out for a chain with a history of mental illness and long-term drug use,” Alisha Lopez, Director of Tobacco Programs at Day One, said. “It shows what a family can go through in dealing with substance abuse disorder among one of the children or teens and how that can affect their siblings, their parents or their friends.”

Lopez said the intention of the screening is to provide a space for youth, adults, and community members to openly discuss relevant youth issues that are represented in the show, and to have a guided conversation with substance use and mental health experts.

“We hope to provide an open and safe space for dialogue, which isn’t always the case either in homes or at school or in other spaces,” Lopez continued. “We really hope to create that safe space.”

The event begins with food and games at around 5 p.m., according to the schedule. Resource booths for several organizations will also be on-site for guests to visit before the panel begins at about 6 p.m.

Viewing of the episode will be on a large outdoor blow-up screen at 7:30 p.m., outside Day One’s office at 175 N Euclid Ave. in Pasadena.

The event – from the panel to the screening – is free to attend and registration is encouraged but not required.
