The California Art Club and The Old Mill are joining forces to present “Plein Air Day” on Saturday, February 26, with family-friendly activities for budding artists and art enthusiasts alike to celebrate the practice of painting outdoors.

The event, which will take place “en plein air” (in the open air) from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and with free admission, includes a Paint/Sculpt-Out in the beautiful gardens surrounding The Old Mill and an Outdoor Art Market.

During the Paint/Sculpt-Out, CAC artists will create works inspired by the lush native flowers and plants in the Old Mill gardens, as art enthusiasts watch and gain insights into their creative process for this beloved category of art. Art stations will be set-up around the grounds for attendees of all ages to try their hand at drawing and painting the inviting scenery that surrounds them.

The Outdoor Art Market will provide an opportunity for attendees to acquire new works and enjoy reduced pricing on surplus art supplies, gently used art books, frames and more.

The event coincides with the opening reception for A Walk Down Memory Lane, the newest exhibition at the California Art Club Gallery at The Old Mill.

About the California Art Club

The California Art Club (californiaartclub.org), established in 1909 by early California Impressionists or plein air painters, is recognized as one of the oldest, largest, and most active leading professional art organizations in the world. The mission of the Club is to promote traditional fine arts in the fields of painting, drawing and sculpture; produce and promote art exhibitions that foster greater understanding of traditional art heritage and California history; and furnish educational opportunities in the fine arts. Members include nationally renowned artists, art students, art scholars and patrons, and leading collectors and members of the business community to interject different perspectives into the ongoing dialogue about traditional fine arts.

About the California Art Club Gallery at The Old Mill (El Molino Viejo)

Since 1999, the California Art Club and The Old Mill Foundation (www.old-mill.org) have partnered to provide a venue at which contemporary-traditional fine art paintings created by the Club’s Artist Members could be showcased year-round. With a series of themed exhibitions, the Gallery offers an ever-changing look at the life and land of California through the eyes of many of the state’s foremost representational artists. The Old Mill, completed in 1816 as a grist mill for Mission San Gabriel, is the oldest commercial building in Southern California. The room that is now the gallery was originally the Granary, where milled grain was stored. The California Art Club Gallery at The Old Mill is located at 1120 Old Mill Road in San Marino, Calif., and the telephone number is (626) 449-5458. As of January 2022, temporary gallery hours are 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday.
