The Roadhouse Series Continues With A Tribute to Richie Furay, Pioneer of Country Rock

Published on Feb 16, 2022

The Coffee Gallery Backstage in Altadena continues its Roadhouse Series on Thursday, Feb. 17, with “A Tribute to Richie Furay: Pioneer of Americana Music,” starting at 7 p.m.

In the history of rock ‘n roll music and especially the subgenre known as country-rock, few founding innovators stand as tall as Richie Furay. He co-founded two of the bands that are significantly influential to today’s mainstream country and Americana music: Buffalo Springfield and Poco.

With Furay’s peers Stephen Stills, Neil Young, Bruce Palmer and Dewey Martin, Buffalo Springfield forged a country flavored rock sound that forever left their mark on the sound of one of the most important eras in American popular music.

Poco, with Jim Messina, Rusty Young, Timothy B Schmidt, Randy Meisner, George Grantham, and Paul Cotton, was one of the most dynamic recording groups and live performance bands to take center stage in the late 60s and for the next 50 years.

Furay’s solo career took shape after leaving Poco in the early 70s, with the help of David Geffen and Asylum Records, where he recorded a series of solo albums that were consistent with his work with Buffalo Springfield and Poco. Albums like I’ve Got A Reason, Dance a Little Light and Heartbeat of Love stand alongside the best solo albums of his peers, Neil Young and Stephen Stills.

Furay was inducted into the Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame in 1997 with Buffalo Springfield. He continues with music projects today including an upcoming new album of country classic covers. He has recently released a live album of his 2018 return to the Troubadour where Poco made their debut in November of 1968.

This performance of The Richie Furay Band will be part of the upcoming documentary, “Richie Furay: Through It All,” for which a portion of the proceeds will go toward finishing the film.

Joining this show as special guests will be Carla Olson, one of LA’s finest solo artists and producers and co-founder of The Textones with Kathy Valentine. Other special guests include singer-songwriter and country rock veteran John Beland, Ronnie Mack of the legendary Palomino Club’s Barn Dance fame, Doug Altman, and Scottish-American singer-songwriter Fjaere.

The rest of the outstanding Roadhouse veteran crew of talented songwriters and musicians who will be the celebrating Richie Furay’s music will include Rick Bagby, Owen Goldman, Brooks Taylor, Karman Jeanne, Pam Loe, Fish Olmos, Scott Memmer, recording artist Michael Monroe Goodman, Nick Guzman, and Gary Stockdale.

Tickets to the concert are $20.
