“Taste of Art: Women in the Collections” at The Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens in San Marino features chef, author, and museum educator Maite Gomez-Rejón on Thursday, April 28, as she takes attendees on a virtual journey through the 1881 cookbook, “What Mrs. Fisher Knows About Old Southern Cooking,” by Abby Fisher, one of the country’s first African American cookbook authors.

Born enslaved in 1832, Fisher learned to cook in South Carolina plantation kitchens. After the Civil War, she relocated to San Francisco where she became a sought-after cook, caterer, and business owner. Friends and patrons insisted that Fisher – who was illiterate – write a cookbook. She dictated stories and recipes to create what would become the second cookbook penned by an African American woman in the U.S.

In this virtual class, participants will make Fisher’s Blackberry Brandy Smash, Corn and Tomato Soup, and Crab Croquettes.

The event begins at 5 p.m.

Tickets are $30 for The Huntington members and $45 for the general public.
