On Saturday, the Pasadena Conservatory of Music’s Barrett Hall will resonate with the exhilarating sounds of the Kaleidoscope Chamber Orchestra’s 9th Season in Concert.
This Los Angeles-based orchestra, founded in 2014, has gained international recognition for its innovative approach to classical music performance, artistic excellence, and community engagement.
Their upcoming concert promises to be a feast for the ears, featuring premieres of works commissioned by Anna Clyne, Han Lash, Julia Adolphe, Krists Auznieks, Natalie Dietterich, and Peter Shin, among other exciting pieces. The concert will begin at 4:00 p.m., and admission is free, though donations are appreciated.
Kaleidoscope Chamber Orchestra’s mission is to enrich lives through exhilarating concert experiences, artistic excellence, musician leadership, and connecting with the diverse communities of Los Angeles. The orchestra is unique in its conductorless approach, which allows for a democratic process within the ensemble and empowers each member to contribute their ideas and talents to create great art. Their commitment to collaboration, artistry, and community engagement is reflected in their vision and core values, which emphasize the importance of mutual respect, democratic decision-making, empowering infrastructure, and outreach to diverse audiences.
Kaleidoscope’s Artistic Intent is to perform music that speaks profoundly to their community and is both representative of its time and timeless, whether written today or centuries ago. They regularly collaborate with living composers because their music represents our time and stretch the boundaries for what is thought possible without a conductor, both by musicians and audiences, to allow us all to grow through the process. They design programs that explore less conventional concert experiences and allow audiences to feel more personally connected to music and the musicians who perform it.
Kaleidoscope’s Community Engagement and Education programs provide instruction to over 300 students at a Title I elementary school each week. With additional funding, they plan to expand this program to other schools in the future. All of their concerts are free admission so everyone has access without financial barriers.
Over 75% of their programming is presented at Title I schools, hospitals, homeless shelters, and other community venues. They believe in bringing their performances and artistic process to audiences who have little or no exposure to symphonic music with the belief that the experience will enrich the lives of both the audience and the performers.
