Code Some Space Apps This Weekend, Accept the 2021 NASA Space Apps Challenge

Published on Sep 30, 2021

Innovate Pasadena is again leading Pasadena teams – in collaboration with the She.Codes Club at Pasadena City College – in the 2021 NASA Space Apps Challenge, an international hackathon for students of all levels in cities around the world where teams use NASA’s free and open data to address real-world problems on Earth and in space.

From 7 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 2 to 11:59 p.m. Sunday, Oct, 3, coders, entrepreneurs, scientists, designers, storytellers, makers, builders, artists, and technologists around the world come together in a global, virtual hackathon, where virtual teams of two to six members create projects and solve challenges with NASA’s open-source data.

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s hackathon will be an all-virtual event. All local events, including Pasadena’s, will take place online. On the Space Apps Challenge website, participants will be able to meet teammates and create their teams, talk with other participants and space agency experts in online chat rooms, and submit their projects.

Space Apps started in 2012 and has now become the largest global hackathon. Last year, the event had 28,000 participants. In 2016, one of the global winners came out of the Pasadena event.

With the Space Apps Challenge, NASA is able to inspire collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking; foster interest in Earth and space science and exploration; raise awareness of NASA data around the world; and encourage growth and diversity of the next generation of scientists, technologists, designers, engineers, and artists.

For 2021, the event theme is “The Power of Ten,” chosen by NASA because it celebrates the fact that this year is the 10th annual event, and reminds everyone that the next 10 years have much in store, both for NASA and for Space Apps.

The theme also captures the inclusion of additional space agency partners and additional Global Awards.
