Discover For Yourself the Incredible Lost Art of Jirayr Zorthian at His Bohemian Art Compound

The family of Jirayr Zorthian, a free-spirited Rennaissance talent who achieved art world prominence and spent most of his later life at his ranch in Altadena, is opening a group of mural studies by the late artist and muralist on Saturday, Oct. 22, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

These studies were just recently discovered, preserved, and have never been shown in public before. The studies illustrate Zorthian’s rigorous research and dynamic creative process in rendering and creating 42 murals, many of which are still on display throughout America.

Visions of America – The Mural Art of Jirayr Zorthian (1936-45),” an assortment of the artist’s original mural art studies, will be on display in the Zorthian Barn Gallery, some of which became completed full-scale murals as part of the WPA (Work Progress Administration) Project, a Fine Arts Program was started by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt to put artists to work during the Great Depression and to place art in public places for the masses to view and enjoy.

These mural studies present Zorthian’s classically trained skills and his grasp of visual storytelling at its finest, depicting different facets of the history of America, and representing his significant contribution to the WPA project.

The exhibit is free to the public and is family friendly, although no animals are allowed. Parking is free on-site parking. The exhibit space is wheelchair accessible.

The Zorthian Family will also be opening up their Ranch to the public, and will be giving guided tours during the hours of the exhibit. The ranch is located at 3990 Fair Oaks Ave. in Altadena.

The tours are also free. Donations are accepted. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended.
