Enjoy Her Serious Side: Classically Trained Violist (Who’s Also a Comedian) To Perform at Salastina Music Society Event

Published on Mar 17, 2021

Classically trained violist Isabel Hagen, who’s also a standup comedian and named a “New Face of Comedy” in 2019 at Montreal’s Just for Laughs Festival, is performing Tuesday, March 23, in Salastina Music Society’s Happy Hour, on YouTube as well as on Zoom.

On her own website, Hagen labels herself “Funny Comedian. Serious Musician.” Does she ever combine viola and comedy? The organizers of Happy Hour said she does, sometimes. And that’s what you’ll get at this online event!

Hagen began pursuing stand-up upon graduating from The Juilliard School. Her parents have been surprisingly supportive of her new interest. She made her debut performance on “The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon” March 11, 2020 and was the last comic to perform before the quarantine.

As a violist, Hagen has performed and worked with numerous artists such as Bjork, Max Richter, The National, and Steve Reich. She has toured internationally with ensembles including the American Contemporary Music Ensemble (ACME), Alarm Will Sound, and Ensemble Signal. On The Tonight Show, Hagen has also appeared multiple times with musical guests.

Hagen holds a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree from Juilliard.

Salastina Music Society holds Happy Hour online every Tuesday, 6 to 7 p.m., with live musical performance, spirited conversation, and interaction with musicians and music lovers. Occasionally, Happy Hour accommodates the timezones of special guests around the world, but you’ll be informed when that happens.

Participation is free, and you have the option to watch on YouTube or use the Zoom, but there’s some advice that Salastina offers if you’d like the higher-quality audio on YouTube. Check this page out: www.salastina.org/youtube-live.
