Foothill Family recently celebrated the remarkable success of its annual Pass the Hat event, which saw an outpouring of generosity from participants. This year’s gathering brought together more than 200 individuals, all united in a friendly competition aimed at raising substantial funds to support the organization’s life-changing programs. Among the evening’s highlights was the recognition of Mike Buchanan, an unwavering advocate for the community who played a pivotal role in securing $4 million in funding for the establishment of a new Family Center in Pomona.

The event’s centerpiece was the poignant sharing of stories, as they were narrated by Foothill Family’s clients, their families, and the dedicated support staff. Guests were treated to a heartwarming and inspiring account of the transformative impact of Foothill Family’s services, as community members who had received assistance from the organization spoke about their journeys toward success in their personal relationships. Additionally, attendees had the privilege of receiving updates from clients who had previously shared their experiences at the event.

Foothill Family’s roots trace back to 1926 when it was founded in Pasadena by Mrs. Josephine Marsh, a dedicated community volunteer. Mrs. Marsh’s humble initiative, known as “passing the hat,” was instrumental in providing assistance to neighbors in need. She not only initiated this compassionate act but also served as the agency’s first director. In a touching tribute to its origins, Foothill Family continues to carry forward Mrs. Marsh’s legacy by continuing the tradition of “passing the hat” to raise crucial funds for their client services. This friendly competition among teams symbolizes their commitment to supporting those in need.
