Parents struggling to prepare their preschoolers for kindergarten can find hands-on help this Saturday when the Pasadena Public Library teams up with public health officials to showcase a program that trains caregivers to become effective home educators.

The HIPPY Learn & Play event will be held Saturday, August 16, at 10 a.m. at the La Pintoresca Branch, offering families play time, crafts, storytime, and resources while introducing them to a free program designed for parents of children ages 2-5.

HIPPY — Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters — provides parents with tools and confidence to serve as their child’s first teacher through weekly one-hour home visits with trained Parent Specialists.

The program operates 25 to 30 weeks per year, typically from September through June.

Participating families also receive support from a licensed clinical social worker through Family Support Services.

Saturday’s event will allow parents and caregivers to register for the HIPPY program and pick up a free Transition to Kindergarten kit featuring an Interactive Countdown Calendar with 121 activities and 12 family-friendly locations in Pasadena.

Families can also begin their child’s journey toward reading 1,000 books before kindergarten.

Light refreshments will be provided during the event, which is presented in partnership with Pasadena Public Health.

“HIPPY Learn & Play” will run on Saturday, August 16 at 10 a.m. at La Pintoresca Branch Library, 1355 N. Raymond Ave., Pasadena.
