The South Pasadena Tournament of Roses (SPTOR) is holding a giant yard sale on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 9 and 10, at the War Memorial Building to raise funds for its float entry in the 2023 Rose Parade.
A wide variety of items – from clothing to house wares, tools, furniture and more – will be up for grabs during the two-day event.
Friends of the SPTOR may drop off donations of goods for the yard sale in the rear parking lot of the War Memorial Building off Mound Avenue on Thursday Sept. 8.
South Pasadena has been part of the Pasadena Rose Parade tradition since 1893 – 130 years ago. Last New Year’s Day, its float “Sky’s the Limit” won the Founder Award in the Rose Parade.
Hundreds of volunteers are currently helping build their 2023 Rose Parade float, called “Spark the Imagination.” The float will show some lab mice doing experiments in the front, and in the back a house with some gears, a clock, boots flying around, and spinning pinwheels.
The design integrates a Rube Goldberg machine – a chain reaction-type machine or contraption intentionally designed to perform a simple task in an indirect and overly complicated way.
Since June, volunteers have been helping build the core of the South Pasadena float. By the end of November, the float should be ready for the final floral decorations. The front deck has been completed, and a giant magnifying glass, with the words “Science Fair” written on the glass, is also being installed.
