Marked down books and select merchandise will be available this weekend at the Gamble House Bookstore’s Annual Tent Sale, an open-air marketplace where rare books and items not normally available in the shop will be on sale.

The annual tent sale will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. from Friday to Sunday.

After this weekend, books and merchandise will be on sale in a “Second Chance” sale from September 17 to 19, where additional deals will be featured.

“All of the items being offered this weekend are things that we don’t normally have available in the store anymore. And then next weekend sale, the Second Chance online sale is merchandise that’s currently on the website or in stock in our physical locations,” said Gamble House’s director of retail operations Heather Marquez.

Marquez said the books that will be on sale are duplicates of the ones they have in their archives. A lot of books focused on the architecture of Pasadena will also be on sale, she said.

Aside from books, the public can also purchase non-book items such as glass items, copperware, tiles and pottery as well as journals and t-shirts during the annual sale.

Books and merchandise available are priced between $0.99 to $300, according to Marquez.

Marquez said Gamble House members can get 10% to 20% discounts on the already reduced-price merchandise.

She said non-members can sign up for individual membership in-person, at the sale, for a fee starting $50. There is also a student option which starts at $25. A member’s benefits include free tours and discounts on events and purchases through the bookstore, aside from others.

During the annual tent sale, the bookstore grounds will be open for the public for picnics. The bookstore will also be offering exterior tours during the event.

Marquez said 100 % of the proceeds of the annual tent sale will be used for the “conservation” and “preservation” of the Gamble House Bookstore as she noted that they too are impacted by the restrictions imposed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“A vital part of our revenue right now is dependent on things like sales from the bookstore because right now, with the reduction in tours, we’re just not bringing in as much as we normally would.”

“We appreciate the community’s support during this time,” she said.

Aside from the tent sale, Marquez said Gamble House will be holding a number of events this September and October. Information on these events are available on their website: gamblehouse.org.
