Help Dad Make Movies This Year

Father’s Day gifts for the cinemagraphic Dad
Published on Jun 15, 2022

Every Dad is an artist. Every Dad is a filmmaker and writer and a storyteller. This year we’re concentrating on that part of your Dad. He has not won an Oscar yet, but it’s like he could win one every day. That’s a Dad’s life.

So yes, let’s give him the tools for Father’s Day that he needs to make those everyday stories have even more impact, technically speaking.

Get a Grip

Carrying that iPhone around waiting for the perfect moment and the perfect take requires a firm grip. A small iPhone can fall out of Dad’s hands “on the set,” so he needs a hand.

Like the SmallRig Universal Lite Video Kit for iPhone Series 3611.

It’s a compact, multifunctional kit designed for professional videography, live streaming and vlogging. Its one hand-held rig that holds everything his home shoot might require.

It comes with 1/4″-20 anti-twist threaded holes and cold shoes to support accessories like lights, microphones.

On the back is a magnetic quick-release grip to  attach a  complete power supply for mobile filming. The smartphone holder can be moved left and right to avoid blocking buttons, and the split-level design won’t affect the mobile phone signal. The built-in shims help increase stability and prevent scratches. And Dad can shoot horizontally or vertically once the phone is in the cage. (Don’t worry. Dad knows better than to shoot his movies vertically. That’s for Instagram and Tik Tok. Dad’s making a movie.)

This year Dad will be the best grip on the set. All the information you need to get one right now is right here.

Hear All About It

Even the best-shot movie is out of the running if the audio is bad. Pro shooters say, “You can always replace the picture later, but you can’t replace the sound.”

The Shure MV88+ brings that dialogue up close and personal, and puts you in the center of the sound.

Whether Dad is tracking his own band—the drums, vocals, bagpipes, typewriters, monkey wrench, guitars, bass, pencils, the MV88+ picks it all up in mono or stereo. He can choose from multiple pick-up patterns and adjust a host of mic settings to suit any recording scenario with the ShurePlus MOTIV™ Desktop App.

He can record the soundtrack to his own movie. One mic. Should be all he needs.

Catching the Action

Dad’s epic might not take place in an office or house, or even in a recording studio. It might be on the waves, or on wheels, or all on foot. He’s gonna need some help with the angles and action of his GoPro camera. He can attach it to his  black edition 17-40” waterproof extension SandMarc Pole, and jump right into the middle of the scene.

The Pole is made from waterproof aluminum materials, with a rubber grip, and adjustable wrist strap. Whether in the desert or in the mountains, the Sandmarc pole can withstand a host of extreme conditions. with the upgrade to an aluminum tripod mount, it adds to the durability and stability of your gopro footage.

It’s designed to fit the Hero 10, 9, 8, Max, Hero 7, Osmo Action, Hero 6 Black, Hero 5 Black, Hero 5 Session, Hero 4, Session, 3+, 3, 2, and HD Cameras.

Dad can’t impress the Sandmarc Pole. It’s been there and back and back again. Take it used for surfing, diving, snowboarding, skiing, skateboarding, traveling. You get the idea.

Extending from 17 to 40″ and weighing just 9 ozs, Dad can find the angle and distance he needs for every perfect shot.

The Sandmarc Pole is available at camera shops and department stores all over the place, or you can go here.

It’s All About the Energy

Hey, remember this?: In February 2021, the state of Texas suffered a major power crisis, which came about during three severe winter storms sweeping across the United States on February 10–11,[6] 13–17,[7] and 15–20. The storms triggered one of the worst energy infrastructure failures in US history, leading to shortages of water, food, and heat. More than 4.5 million homes and businesses were left without power, some for several days. At least 246 people were killed directly or indirectly, with some estimates as high as 702 killed as a result of the crisis.

We don’t want to freak Dad out. He only wants to make a little movie. But he’s gonna need power for his epic when he takes his iphone and the crew into the Angeles National Forest to shoot the rescue scene.

There have been a host of power stations developed by a number of companies since the Texas Power Failure, but this might be the Mack Daddy of them all.

The EcoFlow DELTA Pro sports a 3.6kWh capacity that can be expanded all the way to 25kWh. Dad can even back up the home power grid should the need arise.

With 3600W Dad’s got a portable generator that can power heavy-duty appliances such as dryers, and lights and laptops, and lots of phones. He can pair two units together to hit a massive 7200W.

The DELTA Pro can also be expanded with  extra batteries, smart generators and even the Smart Home Panel, that can all be run with the EcoFlow app on the iPhone, when it’s not being used to shoot the dramatic rescue scene.
