Home of Week: The Historic Culbertson House Hits the Market

Published on Oct 4, 2020

Gamble House admirers may be interested to know they can purchase a Greene & Greene house of their very own—if they can ante up the asking price of $6.25 million.

The historic seven-bedroom Cordelia A. Culbertson House at 1188 Hillcrest Ave. was placed on the market by Marvel director Anthony Russo (Avengers: Endgame), who bought this Greene brothers home for $5.8 million just two years ago. (Russo also owns the lavish Palladian Pasadena estate known as the Arden Villa.)

Across the street from the Blacker House, another famous residence by Charles Sumner and Henry Mather Greene, Culbertson House is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It was built in 1911 for Cordelia and two sisters at the then-exorbitant price of $150,000 and was recently meticulously restored.

The 8,559-square foot home was the Greene Brothers’ largest residential commission with six bathrooms, more than 130 windows, a fountain, loggia, two fireplaces and a dark green glazed ceramic tile roof. A characteristic blend of Craftsman and Asian influences, the Greenes incorporated classic Chinese design, pulling away from the Japanese lines of the Gamble House. The U-shaped home wraps around an Italian garden.

The home was listed by Crosby Doe and Michael D. Phillips of Crosby Doe Associates.
