Innovate Pasadena Ask Me Anything Series: Startups Rules in the U.S. vs. Abroad

Published on Mar 15, 2021

Innovate Pasadena will present how startup rules overseas are different from what are ordinarily being applied in the U.S., in its next episode of “Ask Me Anything!” or AMA!, on Wednesday, March 17, 12 to 12:30 p.m.

AMA! Is a live session series with leaders and innovators answering various questions related to business and technology.

A free to attend virtual event, AMA! will feature Maggie Shih, co-founder and program director of Mentor Me Zambia, a mentorship company that advises and invests in purpose-driven or social impact companies.

Shih obtained her BS in Management Information Systems and MBA from USC. Since January, she and her Zambian co-founder, Elias Chipmio, has partnered with Africa Business Angels Network (ABAN), BongoHive, an incubator/accelerator in Zambia, and Prospero Zambia, a UKAid backed entrepreneurial empowerment program in Zambia, to establish ZBAN, the first business angels network in Zambia.

“What we learn abroad are always useful back to home markets,” Shih says about her work.

When Shih moved to Zambia, she realized that her knowledge in U.S. entrepreneurship doesn’t work well. Instead, she learned how their markets work, recognized what works and what doesn’t, and built a successful startup using different rules.

Shih’s prior experience includes serving as a co-founder of a venture backed mobile SaaS company Embrace.io, VP of Product and Technical Services teams at Datapop, VP of Product at RSSGraffiti, and a Product lead at Overture.

She currently resides in Los Angeles working as a product and change management consultant and is an adjunct professor at Loyola Marymount University.
