The Altadena Historical Society, in partnership with the Altadena Library District, will lead a hike at the Rubio Canyon Trail on Friday, June 10, starting at 8 a.m.

During the hike, participants will learn more about the Mount Lowe Railway and the engineering of the Great Incline, and explore the Rubio Canyon Pavilion.

The Mount Lowe Railway was considered the Disneyland of its day, and attracted visitors from all over the nation and the world to Altadena, below the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains.

“Its story is not only a history of the resort itself; it is also a microcosm of America from the late 1800s to just before World War II,” the Altadena Historical Society said on the digital history page of its website.

Today, hikers and bikers flock to what used to be a mountain resort on trails that follow the route of the Mount Lowe railway. They can still see on Echo Mountain remnants of the train platform at the top of the Incline, and other relics that help them imagine what life was like then.

A plaque designating Mount Lowe as a national historic site is also fairly visible along the trail.

Space is limited for the hike and registration is required. Registered participants will receive a trail guide and will be required to fill out a waiver of liability the morning of the hike.
