The Armory Center for the Arts in Pasadena is hosting the live book launch of “Sara Kathryn Arledge: Serene for the Moment,” the first extended monograph on the artist, on Thursday, March 11, 6 p.m. The online event features comments and readings of texts from the catalog by Irene Georgia Tsatsos, Sasha Archibald, and Sara McColl, with other special guests.

It will include a presentation of the artist’s rarely seen hand-painted glass transparencies, along with exhibition images, plus an interactive, Arledge-inspired art activity by artist Julia O. Bianco.

The virtual book launch is free and open to everyone, but RSVPs are required.

An under-recognized painter and innovator of mid-20th century experimental cinema, Sara Kathryn Arledge was born in Mojave on September 28, 1911. After studying at UC Berkeley and Columbia University, she was active in the Pasadena art scene in the 1930s to the 1950s.

She taught at the University of Oklahoma from 1933 to 1944 and the University of Arizona in 1945 to 1946. After that time, she was more involved with experimental cinema. Defying convention and authority, Arledge created a diverse and experimental body of work in between film and painting.

“My plan was to extend the nature of painting to include time,” she wrote about her work at one time.

Arledge is considered a pioneer of ciné-dance (dance made uniquely by and for the medium of film) and was one of the first to film dance movement.
