Los Angeles Children’s Chorus to Return With First In-Person Concerts in 2 Years

Published on Nov 6, 2021

For the first time in two years, the Los Angeles Children’s Chorus will be performing in person this winter with concerts in Pasadena and in Altadena. Tickets for the winter concerts, “How Can I Keep From Singing?” are now on sale.

“’How Can I Keep From Singing?’ is the first full program presented by LACC choirs in two years,” LA Children’s Chorus Artistic Director Fernando Malvar-Ruiz said in a statement. “Featuring works by Franz Schubert, Randall Thompson, J.S. Bach, and more, the eclectic variety of songs have in common a celebration of our return to in-person singing, the resilience of our choristers, and the sheer joy of creating music together.”

On Sunday, December 12, the Concert Choir, Chamber Singers, Young Men’s Ensemble, and Chorale will perform indoors at Pasadena Presbyterian Church, at 585 E. Colorado Blvd., starting at 7 p.m.

On Sunday, December 19, the Apprentice Choir and Intermediate Choir will perform outdoors at Farnsworth Park Amphitheater in Altadena, at 568 Mount Curve Ave. E, starting at 3 p.m.

More than 300 choristers will take the stage at both venues. Malvar-Ruiz conducts the LACC’s Concert Choir, Chamber Singers and Chorale, the SATB (soprano, alto, tenor and bass) choir. Associate Artistic Director Mandy Brigham leads the Intermediate Choir. Eric Lifland leads the Apprentice Choir, and Dr. Steven Kronauer conducts the Young Men’s Ensemble. The choirs perform separately and combined.

The Los Angeles Children’s Chorus has been providing quality choral music training to more than 2,200 children and teenagers ages 6 to 18 since 1986. Founded by Rebecca Thompson and Stephanie Mowery, the first LACC choir was assembled to sing the children’s chorus part for Britten’s “War Requiem.” The LACC has grown to include six progressively experienced choirs, a program of First Experiences in Singing (FES) classes for 6 to 7-year-old boys and girls, and a First Experiences in Choral Singing Ensemble for FES graduates and children who audition at the pre-Preparatory level.

LACC’s comprehensive program addresses all learning styles and levels of experience through a sequential music literacy curriculum and rehearsal schedule, where choristers master a challenging, multi-lingual repertoire of fine choral music in the bel canto style. Choristers also acquire a solid education in music theory and receive individual vocal coaching.

Tickets for the Pasadena concert on December 12 are from $29 to $49 for adults, and $14.50 to $24.50 for children under 18.

For December 19, tickets will cost $20 for adults and $10 for children under 18.
