Perry’s Joint has been a long-time supporter of John Muir High School Early College Magnet, and students are finding ways to thank this local businesses that has invested in them over the years through support for college scholarships.

On Saturday, January 30th, as part of the first John Muir High School Community Project, the school will honor Perry’s Joint, a restaurant, cafe and longtime neighborhood hangout, just up the street from the school on Lincoln Avenue.

As Muir Principal Lawton Gray explained recently, “(Perry) has just done so much, and we just really wanted to do something different to say ‘thank you.’”

The event, called “Mustangs Give Back,” will celebrate small local businesses, and according to Gray, will be held “at least once a quarter to honor them.”

“We want people to shop at those small businesses,” added Gray, “and help those small businesses, especially at this time.”

As Gray explained, the idea came about during a recent PTSA meeting held to discuss school fundraisers.

“A parent said, ‘Why don’t we actually support a business this time?’” said Gray. “They’re all going through hard times.” Members of the Muir community are encouraged to dine and order at Perry’s on that Saturday to show their gratitude for his longtime contributions, said Gray.

While Gray acknowledged that Perry’s is an example of a business surviving through the pandemic, he said, “We really want to say ‘thank you’ for all that they have done. He has done so much for us, like when he donates a weekend’s sales to our scholarship fund? We thought, ‘It has to be him.’”

As Gray noted, “Our students know Perry. When we hold our graduation ceremonies, he is there, and everyone knows him. He is part of our community.”

The ‘Mustangs Give Back” event will take place from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Perry’s Joint is at 2051 Lincoln Ave., Pasadena. Online ordering is available at perrysjoint.com and supporters are encouraged to wear Mustang blue and gold for pickup orders.
