New Christy Minstrels Original Member Art Podell Teams With Guitarist Tracy Newman at Coffee Gallery Backstage Sunday

Published on Jul 23, 2022

Art Podell, an original member of The New Christy Minstrels, and Tracy Newman, who has been playing guitar since she was 14, will be performing together at the Coffee Gallery Backstage in Altadena on Sunday July 24, starting at 7 p.m.

Podell and Newman have played many shows at the Coffee Gallery and have a wonderful loyal fan base.

In the late 50s and early 60’s, Art Podell was also one-half of the duo Art and Paul on Columbia Records – they were the reason Simon and Garfunkel weren’t called Art and Paul. Art Podell and Paul Potash were already signed to Colombia Records at the time. Art and Paul’s two CDs were recently re-released by Sony.

Podell continues to perform and write songs, as well as articles for music periodicals. He hosts ‘”Roots Music and Beyond” on KPFK-90.7 FM Los Angeles once a month. He is a national folk music treasure.

Tracy Newman did a PBS series in 1965 about folk music on an existing show for children called “What’s New.” She was a founding member of The Groundlings Theater, which led her to a long TV writing career starting on “Cheers,” and including “Ellen” for which she, along with her writing partner, John Stark, won an Emmy for the “Ellen” coming-out episode. In 2003, Newman left TV writing and started a company called Run Along Home for children’s songs. She has three CDs for grown-ups out and three CDs for kids.

On Sunday, Podell and Newman will be with their “Lockdown Friends,” among them Michael Gardner, who has been writing songs since the early 70s; Dennis Roger Reed, a roots/folk singer/songwriter and instrumentalist based in SoCal; Dr. Scotty Jacobs, originally from Columbus, Ohio, and now living in San Diego, who’s proud to have been a long-time irregular member of The Punta Gorda Guitar Army; and Richard Lappin, who is a latecomer to music but quickly developed a taste for songwriting.

Tickets are $20.
