Objects of Desire: DIY Beauty

Pasadena hair salons are snipping indoors again as the city inches toward reopening. That’s great news for a lot of shaggy heads in town, as well as for their scissors-wielding caretakers. But that doesn’t mean a return to the insouciant salon visits of pre-pandemic days. The City of Pasadena still mandates such safeguards as mask-wearing and low occupancy –no more than 25 percent of the salon’s capacity.

Of course, nothing beats a cut commandeered by a talented professional, but not everyone is ready to make the leap to indoor grooming. For those, there’s the adventure of DIY haircuts. YouTube has literally zillions of video tutorials on cutting hair for children of all ages and genders, so find a look you like and give it a whirl. Allure magazine’s instructions are a good place to start.

Here are some tools and accessories for intrepid do-it-yourselfers.

MAKING THE CUT

You don’t have to spend a fortune (although you can) on hair-cutting shears that will give you a sleek result. These 5.75-inch hair-cutting shears are made of Japanese steel by Fromm, which has been manufacturing professional stylist tools for more than a century. These have a polished-silver-mirror finish, as well as a smooth blade and a nick-resistant beveled blade.

Fromm Explore 5.75-inch Shear Silver, $29.49, Sally Beauty, 631 N. Fair Oaks Ave., Pasadena. Call (626) 578-7512 or visit SallyBeauty.com.
